Quick newsflash… we had a proposal here in the grounds at the weekend…. “down by the river”, and we’re told she said yes!! Hopefully they’ll come back here for the wedding next year ;0)

Hi, My name is Elaine Mackman. I lived at Kirkhill Mansion for several years before the renovation was carried out with my husband and four young children. Whilst initially i fell in love with the house itself and it’s history, I much prefer being outside, looking over to the unspoilt views towards the Pentland Hills. Our children benefited greatly from the tranquil nature of the grounds surrounding Kirkhill. When I Google Earthed it I actually found a heart of trees that surrounds the building and in many ways I can see why. A true and natural “Heart of Midlothian.” Anyway, it’s spring and they’re all at it. That is, the birds and the bees! This is simply one of the best times of the year at the grounds of the Kirkhill Estate to view the wonderful range of wildlife literally on the doorstep. If you sit quietly, maybe dare to turn your phone off and shut out the outside world for a moment, you could be looking at what my children at times think is like a scene from Bambi. There are, living in the wilderness at Kirkhill, roe deer, bats, water voles, thrushes, buzzards, red kites, woodpeckers, butterflies, rabbits, squirrels and many many more, not to mention life in the river, and we think an otter. Don’t hold me to that one as that’s the only thing I’ve not seen! Also, I only know about the water voles because our old cat kindly brought me one! Whilst we try to keep the front and back lawns fairly formal, the intention with regards to the wildlife features is to not disturb them overly so, hence there are some fairly rugged brambles heading down towards the river walks. Our wild friends and creatures all seem quite shy though, so just whisper when you take a walk or look and enjoy. Elaine Mackman

The Laird has started his very own Business – Based around his years travelling the Globe and working in almost every field imaginable – he is now starting a company that will truly make his business and travel experience available to older children who might be a little stuck. In this age of mass unemployment for 18 – 24 year olds he feels it his duty to make some contribution to help solve this problem and give kids some direction.
