Kirkhill has had an awful lot happen in and around it over the centuries.
Almost certainly built on the site of an early medieval church - said to have had links with the Templars (temple is the nearby village to the south east) the site stands only 3 miles from Borthwick castle - Mary Queen of Scots last free refuge from which she escaped dressed as a maid only to be captured on the road to the back of Kirkhill Mansions estate on her way to Roseberry. The current house was built by 'King Henry' - Henry Dundas - Lord Chancellor of Scotland the pre eminent lawyer of his time - portrayed in the film amazing grace.
The current Kirkhill was built as the dower house for the Dundas' of Arniston who made their money from law coal and India. In fact the current Lady Dundas was in fact born at Kirkhill in the middle of the last century.
